Best of E3 2014: Sports & Racing

The curtains have closed on another E3, and it’s hard not to walk away being excited for what’s in store in the near future (and beyond). If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that a lot of great games are in the works for every platform—so many, in fact, that it might be hard to keep track of what titles we liked the best. To help you out, the Walmart GameCenter team has scoured over everything we saw last week, to bring you our picks for the best games from E3 2014.

Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Canada
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Release Date: 09.09.2014

The EA Canada team that works on the NHL franchise may be the best group of developers EA Sports has right now. Consistently, year after year, they improve their game in a way that makes every hockey fan happy—and this year, they’ve even outdone their usually stellar efforts. With revamped character models, a brand-new puck, and a new physics and collision system, the game plays more realistically than ever before. On top of this, the presentation sees an upgrade, highlighted by Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk in the broadcast booth to make every showdown on the ice feel like a game of the week.

A handful of open-world racing games have already been announced for the new generation of consoles, but none of them can match Forza Horizon 2’s pedigree. With the engine that powered Forza Motorsport 5 under the hood, Horizon 2 is primed to offer tight, enjoyable racing action—and the chance to burn rubber against intelligent AI inspired by the behavior of real players, thanks to the returning Drivatar system. Plus, the slice of southern Europe in which the game takes place looks positively stunning on the Xbox One, with insanely detailed dynamic weather effects and realistic lighting.

Title: FIFA 15
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Canada
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, 3DS, PC
Release Date: 09.23.2014

Maybe it’s all this World Cup fever going around, but we can’t wait to get our hands (and virtual feet) on FIFA 15. What makes this year’s edition look so good is the host of details the dev team is focusing on both big and small—all of which make for not only a more realistic soccer experience, but a more dramatic and personal one. The game now dynamically tracks and expresses the emotional state of the players, so when you get one of your forwards in position and he heads in a seemingly impossible goal, his teammates—and the entire stadium—will be cheering along with you.

Walmart Dot-Com - The Crew - Image01

Title: The Crew
Publisher: Ubisoft

Release Date: 11.11.2014

Ever wanted to live out the Great American Road Trip in videogame form? Ubsioft’s new racing franchise, The Crew, earns a spot on our list because it’ll let you do exactly that. The game’s open-world map spans the sunny beaches of Miami, the streets of New York City, the hills of San Francisco, along with just about everything in between. This digital America’s not quite as big as the real deal, but it’ll still take hours to get from one side to the other, which makes this a massive—and massively exciting—proposition, especially when you consider that the seamless online play will let you bring your friends along for all the rubber-burning ride.

Walmart Dot-Com - WWE 2K15 (Hulk_Hogan)

Title: WWE 2K15
Publisher: 2K Sports
Developer: Yuke’s, Visual Concepts
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Release Date: 10.28.2014

After acquiring the rights to the long-running WWE franchise, 2K Sports knew that while a few of the series’ core elements needed to remain intact, areas like presentation have been sorely neglected for years. After all, it needs to really feel like you’re watching bulked-up hulks like Bray Wyatt and Cesaro exchange suplexes in the squared circle. Thanks to scanned-in, mo-capped faces and completely re-recorded commentary from Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler in the studio together, experiencing sights like WWE world heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan walking to the ring to stare down Triple H will now feel much more like an authentic episode of RAW.
