Best of E3 2014: Action Games

Today our Walmart GameCenter magazine editors pick their favorite new action games that were on display at the recent E3 2014. Find out which titles delivered according to our experts:

Walmart Dot-Com - The Order 1886 - BestAction

Title: The Order: 1886
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Ready at Dawn
Platforms: PS4
Release Date: 02.20.2015

It’s easy to look at The Order: 1886 and think that its biggest claim to fame is its visuals, and make no mistake about it—the game is looking absolutely gorgeous, with graphics that could only be done on the new generation of consoles. However, there’s much more to The Order than that, and what has us most excited for the game are the ways in which it’s looking to shake up third-person shooters. Ready at Dawn’s first original console project will blend together action and narrative to create a cinematic-yet-interactive gaming experience, and the weapons we’ve seen so far offer unique twists on what’s come before. While its delay to early 2015 is a shame, we have no doubt that The Order: 1886 will be worth the wait.

Walmart Dot-Com - Alien Isolation - Best Action

Title: Alien: Isolation
Publisher: Sega
Developer: The Creative Assembly
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release Date: 10.07.2014

The noise and bustle of the E3 show floor can make it hard to get too immersed in a game, but Alien: Isolation managed to offer a truly terrifying experience in spite of all those distractions. Trying to sneak past the hulking, horrifying Alien is a tense challenge that makes you feel powerless in a way very few big-budget games accomplish these days. You won’t be running and gunning your way through hordes of monsters here; you’ll be holding your breath and hoping you don’t get spotted by the predator who’s hunting you. We can’t wait to tiptoe through the whole bone-chilling adventure when it launches this fall—though we might have to play it with the lights on.

Walmart Dot-Com - Assassins Creed Unity - Best Action

Title: Assassin’s Creed Unity
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Release Date: 10.28.2014

While Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag did appear on the Xbox One and PS4, Unity is the first entry in Ubisoft’s history-hopping franchise developed from the ground up for the new generation of consoles. And what a world for Ubisoft Montreal to build: 18th-century Paris at the dawn of the French Revolution. The complex-as-always narrative will follow French-Austrian Assassin Arno Dorian as he attempts to uncover the truth behind one of the most important events in Western Europe in the past 200-plus years. Like all Assassin’s Creed games, the architecture will again play a starring role here, with iconic Parisian landmarks like Notre-Dame Cathedral available as virtual playgrounds to climb and explore.

Walmart Dot-Com - Batman Arkham Knight - Best Action

Title: Batman: Arkham Knight
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
Release Date: TBD 2015

Rocksteady has already shown that they know and care about Batman as much as any DC Comics aficionado, and they’ve gone the extra mile here: They’ve found a way to not only incorporate Batman’s iconic Batmobile, but they’ve also ensured that the balance isn’t so out of whack that it becomes a crutch. The Batmobile also handles like a dream, and it can switch seamlessly between pursuit mode into battle mode and turn on a dime, just like you’d expect. But you’ll also spend more than your fair share of time on foot as the Caped Crusader and pummel the Arkham Knight’s personal goon squad into submission.

Walmart Dot-Com - Super Smash Bros - Best Action

Title: Super Smash Bros.
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Sora, Bandai Namco
Platforms: Wii U, 3DS
Release Date: 10.03.2014 (3DS), Q4 2014 (Wii U)

Expectations were already sky-high for these two new entries in Nintendo’s popular crossover fighting franchise, and Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U didn’t disappoint at E3. The action was as tight as ever, with returning favorites alongside interesting new characters that play in unexpected and imaginative ways. While the 3DS Smash Bros. brings exclusive stages and modes that should introduce the series to handhelds in grand fashion, it’s the Wii U version that really got our blood pumping—seeing iconic gaming mascots Mario, Sonic, Mega Man and Pac-Man duking it out in glorious high definition was truly a sight to behold.
