Best of E3 2014: Shooter Games

The Walmart GameCenter team has chosen our top games of E3 2014 and is giving you the inside scoop on our favorites. Today we look at the best shooters revealed during the show:

Walmart Dot-Com - Call of Duty Advanced Warfare - Best Shooter

Title: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Sledgehammer Games
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release Date: 11.04.2014

Taking advantage of its near-future setting, Sledgehammer Games has pulled out all the stops when it comes to providing you with some of the most inventive—and fun—weaponry Call of Duty has ever let you handle. You don’t carry different types of grenades—you only carry one, but you can switch its settings between frag, EMP, flash, or “smart,” turning it into a heat-seeking projectile that explodes on impact. You don’t use bullets anymore—you use “directed energy” that your guns produce in order to bludgeon foes. And you don’t use body armor, either. Instead, you’ve got a high-tech exoskeleton that gives increased strength, boost jumps, and offers stealth abilities. It doesn’t get more advanced than that.

Walmart Dot-Com - Battlefield Hardline - Best Shooter

Title: Battlefield: Hardline
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Visceral Games, DICE
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release Date: 10.21.2014

Few fans expected a new Battlefield release for this year, and even fewer could have imagined that what we’d get is Battlefield: Hardline, a game that takes all the deep first-person-shooter elements of the series and then replaces foreign war zones with American cities. This is a hard-boiled police drama where players go toe-to-toe with criminal organizations, and the single-player side is being beefed up thanks to the team at Visceral (the brains behind Dead Space). Of course, online multiplayer is still be a big part of Hardline, where cops and crooks square off in action that’ll make many Hollywood blockbusters seem tame by comparison.

Walmart Dot-Com - Far Cry 4 - Best Shooter

Title: Far Cry 4
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release Date: 11.18.2014

Far Cry 3 was handily one of the most interesting shooters of the last console generation, which made rumors that a sequel set in the Himalayas was in the works immensely exciting. Now that Ubisoft’s pulled the curtain back on Far Cry 4, that excitement seems justified. Every aspect of the E3 showing—whether it was the delightfully disturbed new villain, Pagan Min, the increase on vertical mobility with the new grappling hook and helicopter, or the ability to ride elephants into battle—spoke to a serious evolution for the open-world franchise, with tons of new gameplay ideas and a stunning coat of new-gen paint.

Walmart Dot-Com - Destiny - Best Shooter

Title: Destiny
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Bungie
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Release Date: 09.09.2014

E3 offered the first chance to experience the full scope of Destiny, and Bungie’s new franchise didn’t disappoint. From MMO-inspired questing and exploration in richly realized open-world environments to adversarial matches that meld the feel of classic Halo multiplayer with interesting new abilities and mechanics, Destiny looks poised to offer something to every kind of first-person-shooter fan. Perhaps the biggest question mark lingering over the game is the story campaign, but with Bungie’s track record of strong world-building, a premise that spans the entire solar system, and top-notch voice talent like Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage on board, we suspect that it will turn out A-OK.

Walmart Dot-Com - Borderlands The PreSequel - Best Shooter

Title: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: 2K Australia, Gearbox Software
Platforms: 360, PS3, PC
Release Date: 10.14.2014

All of the same great action you know from the premier co-op-shooter series is back, and this time, it’s on Pandora’s moon. The lesser gravity here gives our four brand-new Vault Hunters the ability to now perform super-jumps. If that weren’t enough, our favorite gun manufacturers are back, and this time, each has a new gun class to show off: lasers. Plus, even though it makes no sense, in typical awesome Borderlands style, the lasers can be modded just like regular guns to give acid, fire, ice, or poison debuffs. You get all this and more as you try to help Handsome Jack in this origin story of sorts for Borderlands 2’s charismatic lunatic-fringe bad guy.
