E3 2014: Hands-on with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege

Walmart Dot-Com - RAINBOW SIX SIEGE - Image 02

While it’s been six years since the last major chapter in the Rainbow Six franchise, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Ubisoft’s more realistic take on counterterrorism is coming back in Rainbow Six: Siege. The first location that’s been shown off may be small, but the action it offers promises to be bigger than ever.

Why We’re Hyped
The multiplayer mode we got a chance to try out is a simple premise: Two teams of five players compete, with a group of terrorists that have taken a woman hostage in a suburban home on one side, and a five-member SWAT team tasked with getting her out safely on the other. As the terrorists attempt to fortify the home against the impending assault, Continue reading

E3 2014: First look at Assassin’s Creed Unity

Walmart Dot-Com - ASSASSINS CREED UNITY - Image 01

Over the years, Assassin’s Creed has taken players back to the days of George Washington and Ben Franklin as a witness to the dawn of the American Revolution. It’s transported would-be Assassins to the high seas, where looting and pillaging were a way of life in the 18th-century Caribbean. But Assassin’s Creed Unity looks like it might successfully blend the feel of the two most recent AC outings, transporting gamers to one of the bloodiest social upheavals in the last 200 years: the French Revolution.

Why We’re Hyped
The American Revolution certainly became vitally important on a global scale, but as clashes go, it’s got nothing on the carnage that Paris saw in the late 18th century. And you’ll witness those desperate struggles firsthand as Assassin Arno Dorian, who aims to expose the truth behind the Revolution.

The first thing you’ll likely notice is that Unity’s world truly feels like its in the midst of a bloody, out-of-control revolution where Continue reading

E3 2014: Hands-on with Madden NFL 15

Walmart Dot-Com - MADDEN NFL 15 - Image 02

The latest digital representation of America’s most popular sport is nearly upon us, and it’ll land, as it always does, just in time for another great season of football. Once again, you can take your favorite franchise to the top of the standings and claim gridiron greatness or create your own pro superstar, get drafted No. 1 overall, and drag a team out of the doldrums on your own back. If playing against the AI isn’t your thing, though, hop online and join an EA Sports league with a bunch of buddies or just go 1-on-1 with your rival. Regardless, this is the most intense and most realistic Madden to date!
Why We’re Hyped
Longtime Madden maniacs already have an idea of what to expect when it comes to what happens on the field, but this year’s version promises to bring a whole new audience of up-and-coming football fans into the fold. New options during play selections allow players to receive suggestions on what plays they should call, but the advice doesn’t stop there. Continue reading

E3 2014: First look at Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Walmart Dot-Com - METAL GEAR SOLID THE PHANTOM PAIN - Image 01

It’s 1984, and the U.S.-Soviet Cold War has reached a vast new frontier: Afghanistan. Of course, legendary supersoldier Big Boss isn’t interested in playing politics. Instead, he’s infiltrated the Central Asian nation and intends to track down those responsible for the destruction of Military Sans Frontiers, his former mercenary group—and he’s got a new battle-hardened band of brothers, the Diamond Dogs, to help get the job done.

Why We’re Hyped
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to The Phantom Pain, was like a small sliver of filet mignon—wonderful, but simply not enough to satisfy those players eager to go sneaking in the latest incarnation of Hideo Kojima’s stealth-action masterpiece. At 200 times the size of Ground Zeroes’ black-ops base, The Phantom Pain promises Continue reading

E3 2014: First look at Bloodborne

Walmart Dot-Com - BLOODBORNE - Image 01

Director Hidetaka Miyazaki and the rest of the team at From Software return to collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment in Bloodborne, a new original adventure being crafted exclusively for the PlayStation 4 that blends the studio’s trademark style of gameplay with a rich, gothic atmosphere.

Why We’re Hyped
When Bloodborne is coming from the same studio (and director) that gave us the brutal-yet-brilliant Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, that’s really reason enough to be hyped.

Walmart Dot-Com - BLOODBORNE - Image 02

And yet, while this new project will resemble From Software’s Souls series in some ways, it’s where the game will be different that has us the most excited. There won’t be any shields protecting you from enemy attacks here—instead, Bloodborne will encourage a more offensive style of gameplay. One weapon we were shown was the Saw Cleaver, a straight, razor-like melee weapon that could be used either open or closed. Players will have some extra help in avoiding attacks, however, and that’ll come from firearms used in their character’s left hand. For example, Continue reading

E3 2014: First look at Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Walmart Dot-Com - CALL OF DUTY ADVANCED WARFARE - Image 01
When Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s main protagonist, Private Mitchell, a decorated soldier who knows no other way to make a living, gets an offer to join a private military contractor, it’s an offer he simply can’t refuse. What he doesn’t know, though, is that his new job will send him all over the world into the most extreme conflicts. Luckily, for him (and you) he’s got the best gear money can buy.

Why We’re Hyped

Although the game could easily be done in a modern setting, Advanced Warfare’s near-future backdrop allows developer Sledgehammer to push their creativity to the limit. Fully mechanized warriors, sound-suppressing mines, heat-seeking “smart” grenades, and drivable hovertanks are just the start. Pvt. Mitchell will be able to wield “directed energy” guns where Continue reading

E3 2014: Hands-On With Battlefield: Hardline

Walmart Dot-Com - BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE - Image

Visceral Games is looking to lend longtime Battlefield developers DICE a hand in moving the gritty FPS gunplay for which the series is known away from the soldiers and armies we’ve come to expect. Instead, this entry takes a hard look at a different kind of conflict—one that more people can probably relate to—as Battlefield hits the streets and follows the police as they try to rein in the chaos caused by criminals in a wholly urban environment. The idea of playing cops and robbers will never be the same.

Why We’re Hyped
Hardline looks to succeed where other Battlefield entries have fallen short. By utilizing each of the co-developers’ strengths, EA’s banking on this being the most complete game yet in the franchise. Visceral, best known for their work on the Dead Space series, comes in to help beef up the single-player campaign and infuse some real drama and proper storytelling alongside the action that we always expect DICE to deliver.

On the other side, DICE is taking the world Visceral has made and crafted a brand-new multiplayer suite around it—including new takes on all your favorite classic modes. In addition, the destructible environments and massive maps that you’d expect from something powered by DICE’s Frostbite engine also come along for the ride. Whether it’s automatic gunfire whittling away flimsy cover or a giant crane collapsing in the middle of a downtown intersection, there’s only one FPS that can deliver that kind of experience—and it’s Battlefield.

E3 2014: Hands-on with Alien: Isolation

Walmart Dot-Com - ALIEN ISOLATION - Image 01

Set as a sequel of sorts to Ridley Scott’s original tale of deep-space terror, Alien: Isolation tells the story of Amanda Ripley, daughter of series heroine Ellen Ripley, as she tries to find out what’s happened to her mother. When clues lead her to the space station Sevastopol, she soon finds more than she bargained for.

Why We’re Hyped
While the Alien franchise has seen some missteps in the past when it’s come to attempts to make a really good, satisfying game based on the property, what we’ve seen and played of Alien: Isolation so far has us more than hopeful this one’s going to be a hit.

One of the primary reasons? Like the original Alien, there’s one—and only one—xenomorph serving as the game’s source of otherworldly fear. Amanda’s a scientist, not a soldier, so whenever the Alien shows up, it’s a force to be respected, feared, and avoided at all costs.

Walmart Dot-Com - ALIEN ISOLATION - Image 02

It’d be easy for this concept to quickly get boring if not pulled off properly, but the 45-minute chunk of the game we tried out was anything but. There’s a real sense of tension and dread in the air aboard the Sevastopol, since not only must you avoid the hulking menace lurking in the shadows, but also the human scavengers who don’t take kindly to anyone getting in their way.

So far, the team at Sega and The Creative Assembly have done a fantastic job at capturing the spirit and atmosphere of the first Alien movie—and even if you’ve never seen Ridley Scott’s classic masterpiece, this is one trip to space we think you’re going to want to take.
